Why after all these laborious revisions to the tribe system is there still no quote-reply freature? And why can they not pop in some sort of minimal formatting... maybe just blockquote and pre...

A couple of years ago it would have driven me up a wall (and actually this sort of thing really did).
I took part in a couple of the "Tribe Ideas" sorts of tribes; felt like people were spinning their wheels and getting almost no where; in fact sometimes going backwards. I finally threw up my hands and considered leaving Tribe all together.
I made peace back then with the idea that Tribe may never be as cool as it could.
As Bill Murray chanted in Meat Balls, "It just doesn't matter!"
I take it for what it is ... free.

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 10:30 PMAwe man, I thought you were going to continue with "Riddle me that... Who's afraid of the Big Black Bat?"
I feel so defeated.
Yeah, I'm with you on the "quote" function. While most discussions are short, no more than 10 responses, there have been some that go on for PAGES, and it would be nice to have quotes. On the other hand, there is the "tree" layout. I just wish I could expand/contract different sub-threads so that I don't get really confused. -

Re: Riddle me this....
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 5:33 PMFor that matter, why can't they just feed the tribes out as newsfeeds so I can read and post from gnus like a civilized human being and just bypass their whole grotty WWW-based interface altogether.
Humph. -

Re: Riddle me this....
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 3:31 AMyou can, can't you? Or do I misunderstand? I can read this tribe from Google Reader - there's an orange XML button on the tribe page that allows subscription.

Re: Riddle me this....
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 8:29 PMYes it does. I really think it would help especially when threads get real deep in replies, replies of replies, etc...
Also, the avatar adjustment still doesnt work so Im limited into which photos in my gallery that I can use without it looking horrible. -

Re: Riddle me this....
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 4:48 AMSince Tribe is being rewritten soon, all this stuff should be fixed. -

Re: Riddle me this....
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 7:07 AMI misspoke. I know there is a read-only xml feed. I meant something more like nntp, so you could read and post from the program of your choice.
I wish someone would come along and make nntp cool again. Things would be better. -

Re: Riddle me this....
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 5:47 PMah... now that sounds cool.
It sounds like there's a hole in the market! I think that "someone" is you...! ;)
Some of the browsers are getting close to this kind of concept i.e. www.flock.com
It won't be long before someone creates an app that functions as full browser, reader and writer.
Another idea - an app that imports complete profiles from one social media network to others.... -

Re: Riddle me this....
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 5:54 PMFlock is really cool. In some ways it appears to build on the idea that Opera (browser) had. I only wish Flock was made for Feisty Fawn. -

I just untared it on Hardy Heron and it started right up for me. What happens when you try?
It's nice that they make a GNU/Linux version; it would be nicer if it used a GNU-type install script, or at least included a README so you aren't stuck guessing (my first thought was, where's the configure script, until I figured out, oh yeah, it's not free or even open source).
What I wish is that it ran on the Hurd, which I am trying to get up and running right now (heck, maybe it does work on the Hurd, but I would need to get X working to find out). Not because I really need to run it; I just think it would be funny to have the flock on the hurd. -

Re: Riddle me this....
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 10:28 PMThere are some libraries that I need to run it but that just arent present in anything older than Gutsy. Bummer. -
-
Re: Riddle me this....
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:57 AMIm still runing Gutsy... far too lazy to upgrade to Hardy at the moment. But Ive got it running on an old Dell laptop and it wasnt exactly quick process to get that box up and running last time i upgraded/reinstalled. <sigh /> -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Riddle me this....
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 7:54 AMHmmm. As seems to be common with closed source, there are .so files included in the tarball. When I untarred it I first tried running ./flock-bin -- which is just the binary, and it and failed, looking for libmozjs.so (if I remember correctly). But ./flock is a shell script that runs the binary with the right libs. At least on my system. Maybe if there is library missing on gutsy you could build it. I guess that's probably more trouble that you want to deal with, though.
Anyway, when I ran it it had widgets for doing things with things like facebook and flikr, but I didn't see tribe, so....
