i have a potential client who currently uses nexternal as her shopping cart software. HOLY CRAP. they are EXPENSIVE!! $250/month for a sub-standard system, it looks like.
she needs an SSL certificate and new hosting.
nexternal hosts the shopping cart section of the site (for $250).
she's paying 700/yr for her SSL certificate.
i'm thinking of re-doing her stie using osCommerce or another shopping cart (recommendations??!?!).
hostdime (i'm a hostdime reseller) offers SSL certificates to the reseller for $50/yr, plus $3/mth for the dedicated IP.
ok, so i'm looking for thoughts on shopping carts. i think i can get the best deal for her by just re-doing her site....

Re: e-commerce, ssl
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 9:50 PMI have a re-seller account with westnic.net, it comes with up to 3 free SSL's and 8 dedicated IP's -- over that limit I pay the same $3/month
The same company offers business website hosting *including* 2 SSL's and 4 dedicated IP's - looks hefty at $20 a month (reduced to $15/month if you pay the whole year in advance) but compared to what your client is paying now it's a STEAL!!!
I can't believe the shopping cart company can charge that much! $250 per month??? That's $3,000 a year!!! Does your client really make enough online sales to turn a profit? Must be a booming business. Wow. Good luck! They definitely need you as their web developer. -

Re: e-commerce, ssl
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 10:28 AMwow. i think i've found the topic of my next biz blog: how web designers save YOU money.
we're a thrifty bunch. ;)
i guess i've grown up in the era where "if it's on the internet it should be free."
i tell my clients that they NEED to give out something for FREE on their websites. it doesn't have to be anything that COSTS them; just information. some clients really struggle with that. how will i get new clients if i give them all the information on my website?
won't they call someone else then? or do it themselves?
i've gotten this MAJOR INFLUX of clients this month because they can't refuse my services once i TEACH them a few things. for FREE.
people TRUST you if know what you're talking about, and are willing to share some of the knowledge at no cost.
yeah... nexternal will die because of its "take all their money, for nothing" attitude.
web designers... will live. :)
and pro-create.
hehe.
jesse--thanks for the verification on pricing! :)
