I suppose I miss understood

So I have an interview for web designer job in a few days. I spoke with the HR person, and she suggested I look at their website and tell her what I thought. She also asked me to look for a "people" page to read about those who worked there.

I looked at the site. The design is nice, but its all in Flash and so that breaks my back button. I see that they have a nav for the site when you turn off the style sheet, but its not the same as the main nav for the site. I thought the font was a little hard to read, since its flash. I did like some of the print things they did, and they seem to have some large clients. I like the layout, just thought the site could use some refinement. And I couldn't find the people page.

I told her what I thought of the site, from a designer/builder perspective, and she was kind of bothered. So it seems I was supposed to go to the site, and rave about the awards they've gotten, since thats what everyone else does. She kind of pointed out that I missed on what I was looking for, that I had messed up. Also she said that the "people" page was off the homepage, not the inside pages. I had went to every inside page, not any of their homepage sub navigation links.

Ive always built sites where any important was available from the home and inside pages, so people don't need to have to go to the homepage for anything they need, since most searches will take you to an inside page of your site.

I thought she wanted my design opinion on the structure and usability of the site...since Im applying for the web design job. I was asked this by another company...because they wanted my opinion on the usability of the site.

Just that, as a designer, I try to really think of these things, all the time.

Wouldn't any of you other designers out there think the same way??

you did the right thing. They were looking for a 'yes' person, not you.

Agreed. Maybe they are too attached to their design. I will say that when it comes to Flash and those that use it/have it, I find many people that just seem to look at you funny when you dont go along with "Flash is the best thing since sliced bread." philosophy.

Part of being a professional is knowing your field well enough to articulate best practices based upon experience, well done! I know that I've had to clean up behind folks who don't ask "why?", and don't *have* the experience to know any better. Sounds like they are not ready yet, and pretty immature about it too!

to the original poster, and all replies:

          EPIC FAIL.

          peple skillz. u lackz them.

If you are pointing out all of a site's flaws to the freaking ***HR*** person in your first interview for a job, you do not have the requisite social skills to function in any nominally sized organization.

Right. This from someone using "leet speak". She was asked to look at the site and was applying to be their web designer. I think to anyone who is a designer it would would mean look at it and tell me what you can do to make it better. She did so. The HR dweeb being a dweeb took offense cause 1.) she is a HR person and doesn't understand how to ask a proper question for the life of them 2.) Failed to comprehend asking a designer to look at something means (to a designer) to look at it and make it better.

Nightwind has posted many times here and in other forums, i think she is probably the (not "leet") rest of us and does have the skills to work for anyone.

            Have a wonderful day

When I read the OP, I thought to myself "I'd do that too.". I took it to mean she wanted feedback from you too.

Yeah. I could of seen where the OP could of been in the wrong if she gave her critique when they had not asked for it. HOwever, they asked and she delivered her *opinion*. Maybe some companies want us to be mechanical like the machines we work with.

I had a boss tell me once I wasn't a "team player". What the dumb bitch was really saying is that I was voicing an alternate opinion to what hers was and she wanted me to be a yes man like the bowl of jello that I had replaced.

Well, being a yes-man/yes-woman can be damaging to your career, not to mention your sense of self and integrity. It's an individual choice, best to think about the long term consequences, and don't short yourself!

Sad but true. A lot (I won't say all) of HR people are clueless. I maintain a web site for a volunteer professional organization. I took a look at one of the job openings on the site that some HR person posted on it. The job requirements were a page long by themselves! Not to mention the 4 or 5 paragraphs of why the company was so great. I suspect said company will have the opening a good, long time even in this bad economy.

Maybe "functioning in any nominally sized organization" isn't the goal. i would say the same thing. Give an honest opinion. Yes people are a dime a dozen. An honest opinion is worth it's weight in, um... gold? code? Maybe it is for that very reason that I don't do corporate work. I'm too honest. If the person I am talking with is willing to listen to the strengths and weaknesses, then we have a great start. If, at the start, they are looking for a yes-man who might be allowed, in an undefined future, to give an opinion, then forget it, that is not what I get paid for.

So, yes, you did just the right thing. If this didn't end up working out for oyu- hold out for something that actually is worth your time, and opinion.

Thank you all whom kind of agreed with me. I really wanted to see if I wasn't the only person who would have answered the question the way I did. Good to know I'm not the only web designer who thinks this way.

Well, I had my interview with said company this morning, and it actually went really, really well. I had been stressing over my original question for 2 days, and that didn't even matter when I went to the interview. The company seems pretty interesting, and they are having me come in on Monday, to "test" me out, have me work there for a day or two, see if I like it there, and for them to see if I work with everyone else.

    Hopefully it goes well.

I think you did the right thing, and all your observations were spot on! However, a little diplomacy goes a long way a well. Such as giving them a lot of positives, and a offering your expertise to take it to the next level. Such as "Looks great - professional layout, exciting color palette, etc. And I would love to work on a project like this because I can see where my skills and experience in accessibility and ___ could help make it even better." Just be yourself and when you find a place that likes you for your skills AND your approach, then you know it's a good fit. :)

      How'd the test day go?
