this kind of has something to do with web design

topic posted Wed, December 12, 2007 - 9:19 PM by  gertie
hehe.

ok, so one of my clients is the republican party of otter tail county (minnesota). and i update their site on my own free will (i.e., they don't send me content, i fish for it online).

and i'm having a little trouble NOT pushing ron paul on the site. because i'm totally voting for him, and think the whole world should, too. but i am refraining from making this obvious on the site. BUT IT'S SOO HARD. :) especially considering none of the staff seems to LOOK at the dang thing. agh!

ok, so who's voting for ron paul? and why and why not?

Not me. Granted i dont know much about him other than the fact that hes been making a bg stink in online circles and is somewhat of the right side of the fence's rebel (like kucinich on the left). Other than that im basing my assessment on who i know that is all about him. And the individuals in question are about as opposite to my politics as you can get. (Im a globalisim supporting scocialist on economics, and a stay out m'business Libertarian on social issues, and a unified pragmatist on most other policy).

i wouldn't vote for him. i wouldn't vote for another republican president if my life depended on it. george bush has not done his party proud, tho, neither have any of those republican senators who are always voting exactly the opposite of how i would have liked them to. not that i have a huge amount of faith in the democrats, mind you...

ron paul ran as a libertarian back in the 80s, but of course, americans are way too swayed by the damn media to make such a bold choice.

so, he's truly a libertarian, but has the brains to run in one of the major parties.

he is the only candidate who wants the troops out of iraq NOW.

i know a lot of people who have been hard-core democrats their whole lives, and are making the switch just for ron paul. he stands for something huge. AND, i think it's noteable that he does NOT want george bush's endorsement, nor the endorsement of any other candidate.

his voting record in congress sheds some light on where he's at on things:

He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.

He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.

Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress.

I think Gertie opened up a "political can of worms" in our web design tribe...

Pixel, I have a feeling you will be deleting this thread at some point....

I hate to sound like a "me too," but I totally agree with you.

Gertie, exactly what does your topic have to do with web design? Just curious.

I concur as well. I mean i really love a good politcal debate, or even randm slanderous political rhetoric, but perhaps this is not the place. Ill let the thread go through the night and then ill kill it... despite the fact that im eager to participate :-)

i'll get back to my original WEB DESIGN RELATED question:

if you are in control of content on a site, how do you keep your personal views separate from the bias of the site?

how do you sell out? especially on a topic like this?

i really want to hear comments on THAT. you guys were just silly and got side-tracked on ron paul.... crazy web designers!! maybe you guys won't have good advice on the REAL matter.... considering you got sucked up into your own views just in this thread!

              gertie :)

                >> if you are in control of content on a site, how do you keep your personal views separate from the bias of the site? <<

by treating it as any other professional site you work on. If you think a client's product blows monkey chunks, you wouldn't put that into the content. Maybe another outlet is putting your time and energy into your own site promoting what ever political view/candidate you believe in and then trading advertising space (that points to your site) on said site for your labor, so everyone walks away happy. You still get exposure for a candidate you believe in, and they get the web updates they so desire.

                >> how do you sell out? especially on a topic like this? <<
The only way I know to deal with this is either to get agreement by the site owners to let you do what you want, or find another outlet.

                >you guys were just silly and got side-tracked on ron paul....

What the hell did you expect them to do?? sheesh.

                >how do you sell out? especially on a topic like this?

Seems to me if you're getting paid to produce content on a site, you grit your teeth and do it whether you like what's on the site or not. <shrug>

I had the same dilemma a few days ago.
I consult at a company that does online news syndication widgets etc, and I was sooo wanting to login as admin and promote Kucinich.
I even manage all the advertizing on multiple web clients and could easily slip in "Go Kucinich ads" all over the web.
But then I thought, "what would Kucinich do?", and I had my answer.

I think it is important to keep politics and personal taste away from work and business, unless you're in the business of politics or personal taste.
